A brief history…

The Calgary Kangaroos were founded in 2002 by a group of Aussie expats passionate about their sport. Since then, the club has grown to be a vibrant, multi-cultural community of Aussies, Canadians, Irish, Brits, Kiwis, and many more.

The club is a welcome place for new and old players to the sport, people new to Canada or who have lived here all their lives.

Want to learn about Australian Rules Football?

The best way to learn is to come out for a kick! In the meantime, check out this video for a bit of background on the sport.

If you’ve got a background in soccer, rugby, basketball, gridiron football, hockey, Gaelic football, there’s a great chance you’ll take to Aussie rules football really well! It’s a sport that borrows both skill and strategy from a lot of different sports, so everybody can take what they’re already good at and translate it over to Aussie rules football.

Bears vs. Cowboys

Who are the Cowboys, and who are the Bears?

The Kangaroos essentially play two seasons in one. Because we don’t have many other AFL Canada opponents nearby, we often split into our two Metro Cup teams: the Cowboys and the Bears.

When we play teams like Edmonton, Vancouver, Banff, Burnaby, etc. we play together as one under the Roos flag. However, in order to maximize our number of games played we split into our Metro Cup teams and play a five to seven game series every year against ourselves.

If you think the intensity drops off when we play as the Bears and Cowboys, you thought wrong.

Auskick

What is Auskick?

The Kangaroos junior program is set up to provide kids the opportunity to maintain an active lifestyle whilst participating in a new sport. Our community Auskick program provides boys and girls aged 5-12 the opportunity to participate in skill based drills and activities to learn the skills of Aussie Rules football, whilst our Kangakick program provides boys and girls aged 8-13 the opportunity to participate in competitive games of Aussie Rules football.

The Kangaroos school residency program is developed in a way where a qualified and knowledgeable Auskick coach will come in to your child’s school and lead each class in a variety of skill building drills and games, with the goal of student having the opportunity to try out a new sport.
